The best way to Snorkel: Venture into the Coral Triangle
You don’t need a scuba tank to fall in love with the Coral Triangle.
Anyone who has spent enough time in the waters of North Sulawesi knows that with just a simple mask and snorkel, you are already in paradise, plastic pollution aside.
Last year, during one of their organised snorkeling trips, a Snorkel Venture group together with their tour leader Lydia became familiar with No-Trash Triangle Initiative (NTTI) and the work we are doing to reduce plastic pollution. They attended a presentation at Coral Eye Resort, one of our long-standing partners, where we shared our approach to waste management, river interception, education programs such as “School On The Beach” and all the other solutions we are developing in North Sulawesi.
Snorkel Venture on the ground
Earlier this year, before Lydia came to North Sulawesi visiting the area for a work trip, she asked if she could learn more about our activities on the ground, taking the time to visit the projects in person.
We spent several days together in between Bangka Island and Manado, discussing the challenges of waste management in North Sulawesi, and presenting the broader picture of NTTI’s work across the region. Talking with our team, with the principal of Lihunu School, and standing next to a river barrier in Manado created a very different understanding than reading a report or looking at photos online.
Those conversations led to something we are genuinely excited about: from this year Snorkel Venture will dedicate a portion of the income generated from their tours and travel activities to support NTTI, and we are honored to be one of the five charity projects they have chosen to support!
Their contribution will help us continue protecting the reefs, mangroves, rivers, and coastal communities that make North Sulawesi such a remarkable destination for both snorkeling and diving.
